Danielle McLaughlin and Madeleine D’Arcy Lane, who run the delightful Fiction at the Friary, will propose a fiction reading amongst the artworks of the Crawford Gallery.

Both are award winning authors based in Cork.

Madeleine D’Arcy’s début short story collection, Waiting For The Bullet(Doire Press, 2014), won the Edge Hill Readers’ Choice Prize 2015 (UK).

In 2010 she received the Hennessy Literary Award for First Fiction and the overall Hennessy Literary Award for New Irish Writer.

She holds an MA in Creative Writing (First Class Honours) from University College, Cork.

Her second short story collection will be published in Spring 2021 by Doire Press.

She has recently completed her first novel.

Danielle McLaughlin recently won the SundayTimes Audible Short Story Award 2019.

Her debut collection of short stories, Dinosaurs On Other Planets, was published in Ireland in 2015 by The Stinging Fly Press and in the UK and the US & Canada by John Murray and Random House in 2016. In 2019 she was awarded a Windham-Campbell Prize for fiction. She was Writer in Residence at UCC for 2018-2019.

Danielle’s stories have appeared in The New Yorker, The Irish Times, Southword, The Penny Dreadful and in The Stinging Fly.

She has won various awards for her short fiction, including the William Trevor/Elizabeth Bowen International Short Story Competition, The Willesden Herald International Short Story Prize, The Merriman Short Story Competition in memory of Maeve Binchy, and the Dromineer Literary Festival Short Story Competition. Danielle was awarded an Arts Council Bursary in 2013. In 2019 she was awarded a Windham-Campbell Prize for fiction.

She lives in County Cork with her husband and three young children.

Fiction at the Friary is a FREE monthly fiction event held in The Friary Bar, North Mall, Cork City, which takes place regularly on the final Sunday of each month (except December), from 3-6 pm.

It features readings by guest authors, followed by a friendly chat, and an optional writing exercise, free book raffle, occasional book reviews and an open mic session (fiction only).
